STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO-More than 40 hot air balloons will launch Saturday and Sunday mornings, July 8-9, 2006 from Wild Horse Meadows field during one of Steamboat Springs' most colorful weekends of the summer. The weekend features the 26th Annual Hot Air Balloon Rodeo, sponsored by Bank of the West and the 32nd Annual Art in the Park, presented by the Steamboat Springs Arts Council, as well as a variety of other events and activities.
Forty-two hot air balloons will take off early Saturday and Sunday mornings from Wild Horse Meadows Field, adjacent to the Meadows parking lot just down Mt. Werner road from the Steamboat Ski Area. This annual crowd-pleaser will feature hot air balloons competing in two airborne events: Rodeo Roping and the Hounds and Hare competition. Concessionaires will sell breakfast items including the festival favorite, funnel cake as well as commemorative souvenirs at the launch site both Saturday and Sunday. Admission and parking at the Meadows lot are free.
Spectators will be delighted to know that the Balloon Shine, sponsored by Sunshine Express at the Steamboat Ski Area will return this year weather permitting. Several balloons will illuminate the night sky on Saturday evening during the Balloon Shine, when pilots light their airborne balloons, creating a spectacular glow. This event is weather dependent.
The Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association will again hold a Window Display Contest this year. Local businesses are encouraged to show their Hot Air Balloon Rodeo Weekend spirit with colorful and creative displays in their windows. The winner will receive a free balloon ride for two at Saturday's Hot Air Balloon Rodeo. Judges will evaluate displays on Thursday, July 6.
The 32nd Annual Art in the Park, presented by the Steamboat Springs Arts Council, July 8-9, fun for the whole family! Art in the Park is a weekend-long art festival in conjunction with the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo with over 130 artisans from all over the nation. Attendees will enjoy fine art and crafts, incredible food, live local music, and children's dance performances and activities. The festival is held in West Lincoln Park - just west of downtown and is open from 9am-5pm Saturday and on Sunday from 9am-4pm. Admission is FREE. The Steamboat Springs Free Concert Series presents Michael Franti and Spearhead in their only Colorado appearance Friday, July 7 at the base of the Steamboat Ski Area. Music begins at 5:30 p.m. with a warm-up band to be determined. The Steamboat Mountain Theater presents the John Denver Tribute Concert featuring the Yampa Valley Boys with special guest Brad Fitch will play two evenings to celebrate the music and life of John Denver. Also Friday evening Strings in the Mountains Music Festival brings the sounds of the bayou: BeauSoleil presented by American Express and generously sponsored by Prudential Steamboat Realty and the Olsen Team at Prudential. Celebrating their 30th anniversary tour, BeauSoleil appears at 8 p.m. under the tent at Strings Music Festival Park.
