The Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation kicked off a remarkable Olympic season with the 2010 Olympian Send-off & Community Celebration on the evening of Friday, February 5th. The timing and the location of the event was noteworthy because it was coupled with the history of the iconic 97th Annual Winter Carnival that took place February 3rd-7th, a festival that commemorates the skiing and ranching heritage that has made this region of Colorado famous. Starting at 6:30 p.m. on the historic Routt County courthouse lawn, all who are a part of the Steamboat Springs community celebrated the notion, “It takes a community to raise an Olympian.”

Special evening festivities included the lighting of the “Community Cauldron,” fireworks choreographed with a special video, the Flying Aces aerial show starring Olympian Fuzz Federsen, past, present and future Steamboat Olympians and a downtown stroll featuring Olympians signing posters at downtown stores.

Walk of the Olympians

The Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association, in collaboration with the City of Steamboat Springs, Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp., MainStreet Steamboat Springs and the Tread of Pioneers Museum is proud to announce the Walk of Olympians project to celebrate Steamboat Springs’ Olympic heritage.

The Walk of the Olympians concept is similar to that of the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles. It is a simple way to engage visitors while acknowledging Olympic athletes’ special place in history. In place of Hollywood icons and mega movie stars, Steamboat Springs will showcase Olympic athletes that have called Steamboat Springs home in the Walk of the Olympians along Yampa Street. In addition to celebrating the athletes and their accomplishments, this project also aims to praise community efforts that make Olympic success stories possible.

In the coming months, 18x18 inch bronze plaques will be placed in the sidewalks along Yampa Street with each plaque featuring two photos of a Steamboat Springs Olympic athlete. One photo will be an action shot of the athlete actively participating in their discipline and the other will be a portrait. Listed on the plaque will also be the years the athlete competed at the Olympic level, their events, any medals earned and the name of the company or individual sponsoring the plaque.

The Steamboat Springs community is being asked to consider sponsorships of an Olympian for this Walk of the Olympians project. As a permanent and everlasting contribution to town that will been seen by visitors and Steamboat Springs locals for generations, a sponsorship opportunity like this doesn’t come around often. Sponsorship for a Walk of the Olympians plaque is a one time fee of $1,750 which includes producing the plaque, installation costs, future maintenance of the project as well as a donation to the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.

If community businesses and individuals are interested in participating or learning more about how to get involved with Walk of the Olympians, please feel free to contact Sandy Evans-Hall at 970-875-7007 or visit Walk of the Olympians.
